This past January, the South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® celebrated its 20th Komen South Florida Race for the Cure with more than 25,000 supporters on Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach. While the Race has been our biggest event and fundraiser over the years, the South Florida Affiliate is so much more than just a Race. The Affiliate is all about our Community.

Here in our service area of Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie Counties, we are able to fund many great organizations like the Caridad Center, who continues to reach out to minority and uninsured women living in rural western and inner city sections of Palm Beach County. For the past 10 years, thanks to the Caridad Center and with funding from the Komen South Florida Affiliate, 7,817 women have been educated, 2,734 have received mammograms, and 15 of those women were diagnosed with breast cancer and have been successfully treated through this program. The Caridad Center is just one of the fourteen organizations receiving Education Grants totaling more than $453,000 this year.

We also granted out more the $1 million in Screening, Treatment and Genetics Programs to eleven health care organizations in our service area; organizations like the H.O.P.E. Project and its mobile mammography van have been providing mammograms and breast health education to women for eleven years.

Where did we come up with $1,453,954 to fund these grants? It came from people like you and the Companies you work for. Whether you participated at the Race, took part in a golf tournament, attended our Annual Pink Ribbon Luncheon or sat down at your kitchen counter and signed a check, you were part of this success! For the first time in our history, the South Florida Affiliate raised more than $3 million dollars, and it was all because of the support of you – our Community!

You might ask, what about the rest of the money? I am proud to tell you that 75 percent of our net proceeds stays right here in Palm Beach, Martin & St Lucie Counties to fund the great work of our partners. The other 25 percent is sent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program to fund cutting-edge research. Did you know that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is second only to the Federal Government in breast cancer funding and research?
